Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Awareness Week; Energy Requirement

While conducting Nutritional Assessment, Dietitians will determine energy requirement based on the patient's condition to ensure the patient receives optimal nutritional needs. Energy requirement should be determined to establish the goals of nutrition therapy.

The use of Indirect Calorimetry (IC) to determine energy requirement is encouraged when available and in the absence of factors that influence the accuracy of measurement. Indirect Calorimetry remains the GOLD STANDARD in measuring energy expenditure in clinical settings, proven to have enormous advantages compared to Predictive Equations.

However, the applicability of IC may be limited at most institutions by availability and cost. In the absence of IC, several predictive equations or weight-based simplistic equation are available to determine energy requirement.

With the presence of Indirect Calorimetry (IC) in HPUPM, Dietitians are able to provide more accurate energy requirement with the aim of providing extraordinary care and align with evidence based.
