| In a groundbreaking achievement, the Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) Department at Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (HSAAS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has successfully performed its first endometrioma laparoscopic laser procedure using the Leonardo diode laser technology. This milestone represents a significant advancement in the treatment of endometriosis, offering new hope to patients struggling with infertility. Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting millions of women worldwide, often causing debilitating pain and infertility. Traditional treatments, such as cyst drainage, cystectomy (stripping techniques), or thermal ablation of the cyst wall, may compromise ovarian reserve and are associated with a risk of recurrence. In contrast, diode laser technology employs focused energy to precisely target and vaporize endometriotic lesions, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This precision helps preserve ovarian function and reduces the likelihood of recurrence, making it a superior option for managing this condition. To achieve this advancement, Dr. Siti Nawwal Ahmad Nasfy, a lecturer and clinical O&G specialist, underwent specialized training at the renowned Malzoni Research Hospital in Avellino, Italy. There, she gained expertise in utilizing diode laser technology for the treatment of endometriosis. On January 17, 2025, she made history as the first surgeon at HSAAS to successfully perform an endometriosis laparoscopic laser procedure (ELLA) on an endometriotic cyst. This cutting-edge technique offers a minimally invasive solution with promising outcomes for patients, particularly those seeking to preserve or improve fertility. The adoption of diode laser technology for endometriosis treatment underscores the O&G Department's commitment to advancing women’s health. | |

The department is dedicated to supporting women with endometriosis, particularly those facing infertility challenges. Given that diagnosis often takes up to eight years and the condition is frequently overlooked, HSAAS is determined to provide timely, comprehensive care and support to every patient. In addition to its achievements in endometriosis treatment, the department has also introduced microwave ablation as a minimally invasive option for managing uterine fibroids and adenomyosis. This innovative approach offers effective treatment with reduced recovery times and improved outcomes, further enhancing patient care. Looking ahead, the O&G Department at HSAAS, UPM, remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence. Through ongoing research, innovative clinical programs, and a strong emphasis on education and collaboration, the department is poised to make further contributions to women’s health. Its vision is to stay at the forefront of healthcare, providing state-of-the-art treatments and compassionate support to ensure every woman receives the quality care she deserves.
