Delivering exceptional specialist care and treatment to children and adolescents

    

The Paediatric team at the Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (HSAAS) offers excellent health and medical care for all children and young people from birth to 18 years of age. We aim to provide quality care incorporating aspects of preventive, diagnostic, curative and rehabilitative care which is child and family friendly.

In general, the outpatient and inpatient paediatric specialist services provides secondary care for childhood illnesses. Tertiary care is provided for Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Neonatology, Cardiology and Intensive Care. This service will be expanded to involve other subspecialties including Neurology, Developmental Paediatrics and Community Paediatrics in years to come.

A dedicated Paediatric Specialist Clinic is located at Level 2 of HSAAS. Apart from general paediatrics, the clinic is held for the following subspecialty services:

  • Allergy and Clinical Immunology
  • Endocrinology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Neonatology
  • Cardiology


We have two dedicated paediatric wards located at Level 4, HSAAS. Each ward consists of 28 beds for inpatient general paediatrics with subspecialty services including acute and long term paediatric care. There are 4 isolation rooms in each ward with the availability of negative pressure and positive pressure to cater for patients with immunodeficiencies and infectious diseases. To facilitate the care of inpatient, the paediatric ward is designed with playrooms, health education rooms, treatment rooms and procedure rooms. A hospital school service or Sekolah Dalam Hospital (SDH) is designed and shared between the 2 wards, to be used by the paediatric patients as an effort in supporting a child’s right to learn during hospitalisation.

Paediatric critical care services look after infants and children whose conditions are life-threatening and need constant, close monitoring and support. Care is provided in the 6-bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) including 2 isolation rooms. Located on the same floor as the paediatric wards, the PICU equipped with research, seminar and postgraduate rooms and a department meeting room that can accommodate 70 people at one time.

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides:

  • Comprehensive and specialised care, with a capacity of 6 intensive beds and 4 isolation rooms, for critically ill neonates requiring ventilation and intensive monitoring.
  • Intermediate care consisting of 8 semi-intensive beds to provide care for neonates requiring less intense nursing care and observation.
  • Special care nursery consisting of 6 convalescent beds for stable neonates requiring continuation of treatment or medication. A dedicated phototherapy room with 20 phototherapy machines for babies with jaundice is also provided.
