DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY

Department of Neurology comprises of two medical subspecialties namely Neurology and Geriatric Medicine, that encompass diseases of the brain, nervous system and ageing. In line with the vision and mission of Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (HSAAS) to become the international hub for the development of hyperacute stroke services, the Regional Emergency Stroke Quick Response Unit or RESQ was launched to facilitate a network of satellite hospitals around Klang Valley, in an effort to provide the services to a larger population of the public. With advanced radiological imaging, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) 3 tesla (3T), stroke could be detected early, that enables the delivery of hyperacute stroke treatment such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy. Thus patients are given a chance of cure without permanent neurological deficits that is often caused by stroke. On the other hand, in-patient Geriatric Medicine services include acute and sub-acute geriatric services, geriatric rehabilitation and ortho-geriatrics.

We also run the out-patient Neurology and Geriatric Medicine Clinics. Neurology Clinic mainly treats multiple diseases of the central nervous system such as cephalalgias and headaches, epilepsy and seizures, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), myasthenia gravis (MG) and many more. There is a special Headaches Clinic that cater for patients with migraine and other forms of headaches. Geriatric Medicine Clinic offers comprehensive geriatric assessment and treatment to the older adults with multiple comorbidities, memory and cognitive impairment, polypharmacy, falls and bone health. As most of our patients’ needs overlap, we run a Neuro-Geriatric Clinic once a week for patients with Parkinson’s Disease, Young-Onset Dementia and others. Besides clinical consultation, we also provide ancillary services such as Electroencephalogram (EEG), Nerve Conduction Study (NCS), Electromyogram (EMG) and Transcranial Doppler (TCD) through our Neurophysiology Laboratory.
